Why 4:3 Matters
Classic games from NES through PS1 were designed for 4:3 displays. The R36H's native 4:3 panel means zero stretching, zero cropping — games appear exactly as the developers intended.
Why 640×480 Is The Right Resolution Here
A higher-resolution panel sounds better and would be worse. Retro systems output very low resolutions — the NES is 256×240, the Game Boy Advance 240×160, the PlayStation typically 320×240. Displaying those on a high-density screen means scaling by awkward fractional amounts, which either blurs the image or makes some pixels visibly larger than others. At 640×480 the maths is far kinder, and the panel is also far less demanding on the battery and the GPU than a higher-density alternative would be.

Integer Scaling Versus Filling The Screen
This is the one display setting worth understanding. Integer scaling multiplies every source pixel by a whole number, so each one remains a perfect square and motion stays completely even — at the cost of black borders when the multiple does not fill the panel. Stretching to fill uses the whole screen but makes some pixels wider or taller than their neighbours, which shows up as a subtle shimmer during slow scrolling. Neither is objectively correct; on a screen this size many people prefer filling it, while purists accept the borders.
Why IPS Matters On A Handheld
IPS panels hold their colour and contrast when viewed off-centre, where cheaper TN panels shift and wash out. On a handheld you are rarely looking at the screen perfectly square-on — your hands move, you shift position, you glance down at an angle. The 170-degree viewing angle means the image stays consistent through all of that, which is a bigger practical benefit than the specification suggests.
Shaders are worth trying once
Games of this era were drawn for CRT televisions that softened and blended pixels. A light scanline or CRT shader costs almost no performance on 8-bit and 16-bit systems and gets closer to how the art was meant to look. It is very much a matter of taste — try it, and turn it off if you prefer the sharp image.
