R36H Review: Is It Worth It?
Our honest verdict plus real user ratings from retro gaming enthusiasts on display, performance, battery life, and value.
Is the R36H Worth It?
Short answer: yes, for most people looking for a cheap, easy way into retro gaming. The R36H isn't trying to be a premium device โ it's an RK3326-based handheld (the same "clone" family as the R36S; see our FAQ for what that means) that nails the basics: a genuinely good 3.5" IPS screen, a comfortable horizontal grip, a replaceable battery, and dual SD slots for custom firmware. It comfortably handles NES through PS1, and does a reasonable job with N64.
Where it isn't worth it: if you want silky-smooth N64/Dreamcast/PSP emulation, a premium metal build (see R36H vs TrimUI Brick), or you're not willing to spend 20 minutes replacing the stock SD card and optionally flashing custom firmware. Budget for a better microSD card on day one โ see our firmware setup guide.
Who should buy the R36H
First-time retro handheld buyers, parents introducing kids to classic games, and anyone who wants NESโPS1 emulation without spending more than a AAA game costs.

"After trying both the R36S and R36H, the horizontal layout is hands-down more comfortable for sessions over 30 minutes. My hands don't cramp up like they do with vertical handhelds. Battery has been consistently 6-7 hours playing GBA games."

"Best I've ever spent on gaming. Screen quality absolutely stunned me โ vibrant colors, sharp pixels, wide viewing angles. Installed ArkOS in 20 minutes following a guide and it transformed the experience. PS1 games run buttery smooth."

"Introduced my kids to the games I grew up with. They're absolutely hooked on classic platformers and racing games. The R36H is basically a family time machine. Only minor complaint: speaker could be louder, but headphones fix that."

"I travel 3 weeks a month for work. This little device has been my best companion on long flights from Sydney to LA. The battery lasts the entire flight, and having thousands of classic RPGs in my pocket is surreal."

"Coming from an Anbernic RG35XX Plus, the R36H holds its own at almost half the price. The RK3326 chip handles everything I throw at it. PS1 performance is identical. The replaceable battery is a massive advantage."

"Great device for the price. N64 compatibility is decent โ Mario 64, Zelda OoT, and Mario Kart all work well. GoldenEye struggles but that's expected for this chip. For anything up to PS1, it's fantastic."

"Bought this as a birthday gift for my husband. He literally teared up when he saw it โ all his childhood NES and SNES games in one device. Best gift ever. The transparent purple shell looks amazing."

"The dual SD card slot is genius. I keep ArkOS on one card, my entire ROM collection on the second. When they release firmware updates, I just reflash the system card without touching my games. Smart design."

"Solid 4 stars. The hardware punches well above its weight class. Only reason it's not 5 stars: the stock SD card was garbage (started corrupting after 2 weeks). Replaced it with SanDisk Ultra and zero issues since."
