R36H Firmware & OS Guide
Which operating system can the R36H run, which settings matter, and how to back up the card that came with it. Every option below links to the project or community source it comes from.

Quick answer
Reviewed R36H units ship with an ArkOS 2.0-based image, so you do not have to change anything to play. If you do want a different system, the community image most often recommended is ArkOS R3XS with the R36H/R33S device type selected. dArkOSRE lists the HL-R36H-V20 and V21 boards in beta, and ROCKNIX does not officially support the R36H. Back up the stock card before you try anything.

Community status for ArkOS, ROCKNIX, AmberELEC and UnofficialOS comes from the Handhelds Wiki R36H page, which names ArkOS R3XS as its most recommended option. Projects change, so check each one's current release notes before you flash.
The two settings that matter on the R36H
- Device type: the R36H has no FN button, so Select acts as the hotkey modifier. In ArkOS-based images, pick R36H/R33S as the device type, otherwise the hotkeys will not work. Our button mapping guide lists the combinations.
- Display panel: according to the Handhelds Wiki, the R36H uses the same "Panel 4 (V5)" display as later R36S units. When an image asks for a panel or DTB file, choose the panel 4 version. A wrong panel file is the usual cause of a black or garbled screen after flashing.
Back up and restore the stock card
- Power off and remove the card from the TF1-OS slot.
- Make a full image of the card on a computer, for example with Win32 Disk Imager's Read button on Windows or
ddon macOS and Linux. Store the image file in two places. - Flash new firmware to a different card and keep the original untouched. That is the simplest recovery plan: if anything goes wrong, put the original card back.
- To restore, write the saved image to a card of the same size or larger with the writing tool the project recommends. The dArkOSRE installation page, for example, advises against Balena Etcher for its image.

Before you flash
- Confirm your board (V20 or V21) and that the project lists it.
- Download only from the project's official release page and check any checksum it publishes.
- Back up saves and settings, then confirm the backup opens.
- Use only games, BIOS files and other content you are entitled to use.
About "GameLab OS"
We could not find a maintained, board-specific "GameLab OS" release for the R36H. The name is used by unrelated things: GAMELAB Console is a seller's handheld, and Playtron GameLAB is a desktop tool for Playtron devices. Neither is an R36H firmware image. If someone offers you a "GameLab OS" file, check who maintains it and whether its device list names your board before writing it.
Troubleshooting
The screen is black or garbled after flashing
Most often the image is using the wrong display panel file. Put the original card back to confirm the device still works, then re-check the panel or DTB choice in the project's instructions. Do not keep trying random panel files from other models.
Hotkeys do not work
Set the device type to R36H/R33S in the Options menu of ArkOS-based images, so Select is used as the hotkey modifier.
The project does not list my board
