R36H Firmware Setup Guide

How to install ArkOS, ROCKNIX, or JELOS on your R36H handheld console. This guide covers everything from SD card preparation to final configuration.

What You'll Need

• Your R36H console (charged to at least 60%)
• A quality microSD card — SanDisk Ultra 64-128GB or Samsung EVO Select
• A computer (Windows, Mac, or Linux)
• Balena Etcher — Free image flashing tool (download here)
• The ArkOS firmware image (download from the ArkOS GitHub Wiki)

Step-by-Step Installation

Step 1: Download the Firmware

1. Visit the ArkOS GitHub Wiki
2. Download the RG351MP image (this is compatible with the R36H's RK3326 chip)
3. Alternatively, search for "Community Maintained ArkOS R36S/R36H" — these versions come pre-patched for R36H hardware
4. Extract the downloaded .gz or .zip file to get the .img file

Step 2: Flash the Image

1. Insert your new quality microSD card into your computer
2. Open Balena Etcher
3. Click "Flash from file" → select the .img file you downloaded
4. Click "Select target" → choose your microSD card
5. Click "Flash!" and wait for completion (5–10 minutes)

Step 3: First Boot

1. Remove the SD card from your computer
2. Insert it into the R36H's TF1 (System) slot
3. Power on the R36H
4. Wait for the initial setup — this may take 2–5 minutes (do NOT turn it off)
5. The console will reboot automatically when setup is complete

Step 4: Configure for R36H

Since the R36H lacks a dedicated FN (Function) button found on some devices, you need to set your hotkey:

1. Navigate to Options → Advanced → Device Type
2. Select R36H from the list
3. This remaps hotkeys to use the Select button instead of FN
4. Common hotkeys after this change:
   • Select + Start = Exit game
   • Select + R1 = Save state
   • Select + L1 = Load state
   • Select + R2 = Fast forward

Step 5: Add Your Games (Optional)

1. If using a second SD card for games, insert it into the TF2 (Games) slot
2. Navigate to Options → Advanced → Second SD Card to enable it
3. Alternatively, add ROM files directly to the first SD card in the appropriate platform folders (e.g., /roms/psx/ for PS1, /roms/gba/ for GBA)

Troubleshooting

Black screen on boot

This usually means a panel mismatch. Try copying a different DTB file to the boot partition. The Handhelds Wiki has panel identification tools.

Console boots but shows garbled graphics

Reflash the image with Balena Etcher — your SD card may have been interrupted during flashing.

Games not appearing in menus

Ensure ROM files are in the correct folders. ArkOS auto-scans on boot, but you may need to manually "Update Game List" from the EmulationStation menu.

Audio crackling or no sound

Navigate to RetroArch settings → Audio → Output Rate and set to 48000. Also check Audio Latency settings.
