🟤 Sega Genesis Games on R36H
Sega Genesis is a light load for the R36H's RK3326, so Sonic, Streets of Rage and Phantasy Star typically run at full speed with the default core.

Performance Rating
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Perfect
The R36H's Rockchip RK3326 quad-core processor paired with 1GB DDR3L RAM has plenty of headroom for Sega Genesis, so typical titles run at full speed.
Recommended Emulator
For the best Sega Genesis experience on R36H, use Genesis Plus GX. This core is included in the ArkOS-based image that reviewed R36H units ship with; community builds may differ.

💡 Pro Tip
Sega Genesis is one of the lightest loads for the RK3326, so most games run at full speed. If a title stutters, try another core before changing other settings.
Where the ROMs Live
The R36H ships with two microSD slots. TF1 holds the operating system and should be left alone; TF2 is the games card and is the one you add files to. Every platform has its own folder under /roms/, and the folder name has to match exactly — a ROM dropped into the wrong directory simply will not appear in the menu, which is the single most common reason a freshly copied game seems to vanish.
| Folder on the games card | /roms/genesis/ (Sega CD: /roms/segacd/, 32X: /roms/sega32x/) |
|---|---|
| Accepted file types | .md, .gen, .bin, .smd, .zip |
The Base System Is Completely Solved
Every standard Mega Drive and Genesis cartridge runs at full speed on the R36H. Genesis Plus GX is a mature, highly accurate emulator and the RK3326 has more than enough performance for it, including the FM synthesis that gives the system its distinctive sound. Master System and Game Gear titles also run through the same core, so three Sega libraries are covered by one emulator.
The Add-Ons Are A Different Story
Sega released two hardware expansions and they behave very differently on this device. Sega CD games run well, but they need the correct regional BIOS file present or they will not boot at all — and because Sega CD titles are disc images rather than cartridges, they take considerably more space on your card. The 32X is the harder case: it added two additional processors, and emulating those on top of the base console pushes the RK3326 to its limit. Expect some 32X titles to run acceptably and others to drop frames.
| Title | Result | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Sonic the Hedgehog 2 | Full speed | Nothing to configure |
| Streets of Rage 2 | Full speed | Six-button pad maps cleanly to the R36H face buttons |
| Gunstar Heroes | Full speed | Very heavy sprite use; no slowdown beyond the original's own |
| Sonic CD (Sega CD) | Full speed | Requires the matching region BIOS |
| Knuckles' Chaotix (32X) | Variable | 32X emulation is the weak point on this hardware |
Six-Button Games Are Better Here Than On Original Hardware
Street Fighter II and the later fighting games were designed for Sega's six-button pad, which many people never owned. The R36H has six usable face and shoulder buttons available, so these games are fully playable without compromise — arguably a better experience than the three-button controller most Genesis owners actually had.
Region matters more on Genesis than most systems
Sega's regional lockout means a US ROM and a European ROM of the same game can run at different speeds (60Hz vs 50Hz) and occasionally have different content. If a game feels slow, check the region of the file before assuming the emulator is at fault.
