How to Install DarkOS on R36H
DarkOS is one of the most talked-about custom firmwares for RK3326 handhelds like the R36H and R36S. It's popular for its clean interface, pre-configured emulators, and strong out-of-the-box performance. This guide walks you through installing it safely.

DarkOS runs from a second microSD card — you do not overwrite the stock card that ships with your R36H. Keep the original card safe so you can always revert.
What Is DarkOS?
DarkOS is a community custom firmware image built for RK3326-based devices (the same chip family the R36H and R36S use). Like ArkOS, ROCKNIX and JELOS, it's flashed to a microSD card and boots in place of the stock OS. Fans like its tidy theme, sensible default hotkeys, and ready-to-play emulator set. Because it targets the RK3326 platform, the R36H is supported through the R36S/clone device profiles.
What You'll Need
- A quality microSD card (a name-brand card such as a SanDisk 128GB card avoids most boot issues)
- An SD card reader for your computer
- Balena Etcher (free) for flashing
- The latest DarkOS image from a trusted community source
Step-by-Step Installation
- Download DarkOS. Get the newest DarkOS image for RK3326 / R36S from a reputable community source or Discord. Verify it's the current release.
- Flash the card. Open Balena Etcher, select the DarkOS image, choose your microSD card, and click Flash. This erases the card, so use a spare one.
- Insert the card. Power off the R36H, then insert the flashed card into the TF1 (OS) slot.
- First boot. Power on and wait 2–5 minutes for DarkOS to expand and initialise. Don't interrupt the first boot.
- Set the device profile. If prompted, select the R36H / R36S profile so the screen, buttons and audio map correctly.
- Configure. Set your time zone, connect Wi-Fi (for scraping box art), and check the hotkey layout. You're ready to play.
