R36H Screen Troubleshooting

If your R36H shows a black screen, garbled graphics, or wrong colors after installing custom firmware, the issue is almost always a display panel mismatch.

How to Fix

  1. The R36H uses multiple IPS panel variants
  2. Custom firmware comes with a default DTB (Device Tree Blob) file
  3. If your panel doesn't match, the screen won't work properly

  5. Copy the correct DTB to the boot partition of your SD card
  6. Reboot — the screen should now work correctly

What Is Actually Going Wrong

A black, scrambled or colour-shifted screen after flashing custom firmware is not a fault and not damage. Devices in this family have been manufactured with more than one type of display panel, and the software needs to be told which one it is driving. That instruction lives in a device tree file on the card's boot partition. When the file describes a different panel from the one in your unit, the device boots normally and drives the screen incorrectly — which is why you may still hear startup sounds while seeing nothing.

Identifying Your Panel

The most reliable method is to boot the original card that came with the device and look in the system information screen, which usually reports the panel type. If that is not available, the practical alternative is trial and error: the number of candidate device tree files is small, and working through them costs a card swap each time rather than any risk to the hardware.

Applying The Fix

  1. Put the firmware card into a computer and open the small boot partition — this is the one that mounts readably on Windows and macOS.
  2. Make a copy of the existing device tree file before changing anything, so you can step back.
  3. Replace it with the variant matching your panel, keeping the filename the system expects.
  4. Eject properly, return the card to TF1 and boot.

If The Screen Works But Looks Wrong

Inverted or washed-out colours, rather than no image at all, usually point to a closely related panel variant — the display is being driven, just with the wrong colour order. The same fix applies; you simply need a different file from the same set. A screen that flickers or tears under load is a separate matter and generally comes down to emulator video settings rather than the panel.

None of this modifies the device itself. As long as the stock card is intact, returning to a known-working state is a matter of swapping cards — which is why keeping it untouched is worth insisting on.
